Great products in the wrong order barely work. Here's the simple thinnest-to-thickest rule for morning and night routines.

Great products in the wrong order barely work. The rule is simpler than it sounds: go from thinnest, most watery texture to thickest, heaviest texture. Here's exactly how that plays out morning and night.

Morning Routine Order

1. Cleanser — a gentle, light wash to remove overnight sweat and oil.

2. Toner (if used) — preps and balances skin before other products.

3. Serum — thin, concentrated formula, applied to slightly damp skin for better absorption.

4. Moisturizer — seals in the serum and hydrates.

5. Sunscreen — always last. It needs to sit on top to actually protect skin; layering anything over it weakens its effectiveness.

Most common mistake: applying sunscreen before moisturizer. SPF should always be the final step, not a middle one.

Night Routine Order

1. Oil cleanser (if double cleansing, especially after wearing SPF/makeup).

2. Water-based cleanser — removes remaining sweat and dirt.

3. Exfoliant (2-3 times a week only, not nightly) — always before serum, never combined with strong actives the same night.

4. Serum — same rule as morning, thinnest active layer first.

5. Night cream or facial oil — the heaviest layer goes last, sealing everything in while you sleep.

The General Rule If You Forget the List

Thinnest to thickest, always. If you're holding two products and unsure which goes first, the one that feels more watery goes on first, and the one that feels richer or heavier goes on last. SPF is the one fixed exception — it's always the final morning step, no matter how light it feels.

You don't need ten steps for this to matter — even a simple three-product routine works better once the order is right.
