A practical, low-fuss skincare routine for hot and humid days: what to keep, what to skip, and how to make your routine easier to follow.

When the weather is hot and humid, skincare can start feeling like another chore. Your face may feel oily by midday, sunscreen can feel heavier than expected, and adding more products does not necessarily make the routine better.

A good routine for warm weather can be surprisingly simple. The aim is to keep your skin clean and comfortable, protect it from the sun, and avoid doing so much that your skin becomes irritated.

Morning: keep it light

1. Cleanse only as much as you need

Start with a gentle cleanser if your skin feels oily or sweaty after sleeping. If your skin is dry or sensitive, you may not need an aggressive morning cleanse. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and says face washing should generally be limited to twice a day and after heavy sweating. citeturn0search11

2. Moisturise according to your skin

Oily skin does not automatically mean you should skip moisturiser. The better approach is to choose a texture that feels comfortable. Gels and lighter lotions can feel easier in humid weather, while dry skin may prefer a richer cream. citeturn0search0

3. Finish with sunscreen

For daytime, choose a sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher. If you will be outdoors, water resistance can also be useful. citeturn0search12

The trick is not finding the fanciest sunscreen on the shelf. It is finding one you can comfortably apply in the recommended amount and use consistently.

Midday: don't keep restarting your routine

If your face becomes shiny during the day, you do not need to wash everything off and start again. Gently blot excess oil if you like, and reapply sunscreen when your outdoor exposure calls for it.

If you wear makeup, choose products that sit comfortably on your skin rather than trying to cover every sign of shine with more layers.

Evening: remove the day's buildup

At night, cleanse away sunscreen, makeup, sweat and the day's dirt. Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it hard.

Then keep the rest of the routine focused. A moisturiser may be enough on many nights. If you use a treatment product, introduce it deliberately rather than stacking several strong actives together.

What about exfoliation?

Exfoliation is not a requirement for healthy-looking skin. If you do exfoliate, keep it gentle and choose a schedule your skin tolerates. Over-exfoliating can leave skin red, dry and irritated; the AAD specifically advises being careful about how often and how aggressively you exfoliate. citeturn0search10

This matters even more when your skin already feels sensitive from heat, sweating or a long day outdoors.

A simple routine to remember

  • Morning: gentle cleanse if needed → moisturiser if needed → sunscreen.
  • During the day: stay comfortable, manage sweat and reapply sunscreen when appropriate.
  • Night: cleanse → moisturiser → one targeted treatment if you genuinely need it.

Don't build your routine around the weather alone

Pakistan has different climates and seasons, and your skin can change with them. A routine that feels perfect in a dry winter may feel too heavy during humid weather.

Instead of replacing everything every season, adjust one thing at a time: cleanser frequency, moisturiser texture, or how much layering you do.

The best routine is usually the one that leaves your skin comfortable and is simple enough that you will actually keep doing it.
